Recreational was founded in 2003 and is run by three partners, Kate, Simon and Anabel Darby.
We are a design and communications studio based in Ōtautahi Christchurch, New Zealand. We are designers and writers, thinkers and makers. Expertise mixed with vision and imagination are our tools. We thrive on design problems and excel in communication challenges. Talk to us about your project.

Kate Darby
Creative Partner
Kate Darby was named one of “50 under 30: Outstanding Global Women in Creative & Digital 2019” by industry publication, The Drum. In the same year, Kate was named “one of eight creative New Zealanders you need to know about” by Idealog magazine.
Kate holds a Bachelor of Design with First-Class Honours from Massey University.

Simon Darby
Creative Partner
Simon Darby started his design career as an advertising agency art director in Sydney before developing his skills in web design, animation and digital illustration. Simon has worked throughout Australasia and North America as a designer, producer, and creative director, winning awards for his brand design and digital illustration work.

Anabel Darby
Communications Partner
Anabel Darby’s writing, communications and account management experience spans 30 years in the international tourism, business events, major events, and hospitality sectors. She was instrumental in the pre and post-earthquake communications for tourism in Christchurch and Canterbury, and has developed a niche focus on business events.

Recreational Partner
Named “Recreational Rising Star” three years in a row, Cooper has made a huge impact on the Studio despite little in the way of formal training.
Cooper strives to bring a combination of care and chaos to his work within the Studio.
